After all, increasing physical activity is only part of the fitness equation.īut overall, Misfit has come up with a product that is stylish, functional and fun. It would be great to have it work with other programs that address other lifestyle areas such as nutrition. This is something they can and very well may address in the future. The Shine currently doesn't "play well" with other fitness programs out there - it is a lone wolf. Also, I found it doesn't seem to register taps well all the time - something that may get better the more I get used to using it. Some men may feel the size of the Shine is a bit too small. Perhaps this was not noticeable to others, but it was annoying to me. My kids loved the way it looked and I would say it would be a great fit for a young athlete.Īs far as downsides, my unit scuffed up a bit after wearing it for a while.

It also is one of the few fitness trackers that are water resistant - perfect for swimmers. It is super-light and comfortable to wear.

The technology in the Shine is quite astounding. But then again, the watch seems to be a secondary feature anyway. While this alternate take on a timepiece is cool, it isn't super practical - it only rounds up or down to the closest 5 minute interval and it seems a bit awkward to tap the thing just to get the time. First an LED lights in the 12:00 position, and then another LED lights solid to show the hour and lastly a blinking LED lights up to show you the minutes. A triple tap will communicate to the unit that you are starting a new exercise (or going to bed at night so it tracks your sleep patterns). A circle of 12 small bright LEDs light up, and the more LEDs lit, the closer you are to attaining your goal. When wearing the Shine, all you need to do is tap it twice to get your progress. The syncing process can be a little tricky, but I've found that it seems to work best when the iPhone or other iOS device is charging. You synchronize the Shine by just placing it on your device. The app is extremely well-designed and clearly shows your progress in attaining your daily and weekly goals. There is an Android version in the works, but for now, iOS is it.

To communicate with the Shine, you need to first download the iOS app. I was a little nervous about the magnetic holder, but the little sucker stays put. You have an option of wearing it on your wrist like a watch or using it with a special magnetic holder that will attach it to your shoe or any other piece of clothing. It even shows if your activity was light or more strenuous. But I've also used it while working out on the elliptical, and it does a good job of tracking my activity. Right now, it supports walking, running, swimming and cycling. The Shine uses a high precision 3-axis accelerometer to track your activity.
